$1,000,000 Government Grant - Facility Expansion
FUNDER: Massachusetts Early Education and Out-of-School Time (EEOST) Capital Grant (Department of Early Education and Care / Children’s Investment Fund)
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club
AWARD: $1,000,000
CHALLENGE: The client’s community lacked affordable childcare options, leaving families competing for a limited number of program slots. The organization’s facility was already operating at full licensed capacity and required expansion to increase enrollment.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Capital facilities grant funding provided by the Department of Early Education and Care and the Children’s Investment Fund through the Early Education and Out-of-School Time Capital Grant program.
MY ROLE: I served as part of the proposal development team, providing project management support, writing all narrative sections, collecting and organizing supporting materials, and compiling the final proposal.
OUTCOMES: The funding completed a capital campaign to construct an addition to the existing facility, creating five new classrooms for preschool and school-age after-school programming. This expansion increased enrollment capacity from 200 to 300 youth.
$140,000 Government Grant - After-School Enrichment
FUNDER: MA 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club
AWARD: 3-year grant – $140,000/year
CHALLENGE: The Boys & Girls Club identified an opportunity to develop a new program for third-grade students in one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas of the city. Families in this neighborhood needed affordable childcare, transportation support, and access to high-quality after-school enrichment.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant funding offered through the Massachusetts Department of Education.
MY ROLE: I developed and administered surveys to multiple stakeholder groups, led a comprehensive community needs assessment, collaborated with elementary school and Club staff to design a program aligned with classroom curriculum and goals, managed the proposal development process, and wrote and submitted the final application.
OUTCOMES: The three-year grant funded a new after-school and summer learning program providing childcare, transportation, free meals, and a wide range of enrichment activities at no cost. The program served 30 youth annually.
$30,000 Foundation Grant - Early Learning Support
FUNDER: Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts Flexible Funding Grant
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club Preschool
AWARD: $30,000
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: General operating support for organizations providing early education and childcare.
MY ROLE: I worked with organizational leadership to identify key challenges, define strategic goals, and document prior successes, which I used to develop and write the full proposal.
OUTCOMES: The proposal was fully funded, providing flexible support that the organization used to fill financial aid gaps for families, improve the outdoor play area, and sustain overall operations.
$30,000 Government Grant - Food Literacy Education
FUNDER: Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education – MA FRESH (Farming Reinforces Education and Student Health) Grant
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club Preschool
AWARD: $30,000
CHALLENGE: A community-based preschool needed funding to expand hands-on enrichment opportunities and deepen family engagement within its existing curriculum.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: A state-funded program expansion grant focused on increasing local food procurement and early food literacy.
MY ROLE: I researched funding opportunities aligned with the preschool’s mission and identified MA FRESH as an ideal fit. In close collaboration with the preschool director, I designed a farm-to-preschool program aligned with grant priorities, developed a detailed project budget, and wrote the proposal.
OUTCOMES: The grant was fully funded, enabling 60 preschoolers to participate in an expanded curriculum featuring gardening, cooking with locally sourced ingredients, and family farm field trips.
$25,000 Foundation Grant - Theater Program
FUNDER: Amelia Peabody Foundation
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club
AWARD: $25,000
CHALLENGE: A Boys & Girls Club free theater program experienced rapid growth, putting it at risk of turning away interested youth due to limited performance slots and resources.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: A private foundation grant to support program expansion and capacity building.
MY ROLE: I designed and administered a survey to measure program impact and used the results to craft a compelling grant proposal.
OUTCOMES: The proposal secured funding for an additional annual musical, allowing 20 more youth to participate and covering costs such as props, stage rental, and staff salaries. This success was later leveraged to secure funding from another foundation, sustaining the program’s growth.
$10,000 Corporate Grant - Food Security Initiative
FUNDER: Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation
CLIENT: Boys & Girls Club
AWARD: $10,000
CHALLENGE: Food insecurity increased across the Boys & Girls Club’s service area. To better support families, the organization needed to expand its weekday free meal program to include weekends.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Corporate grant funding to increase the number of meals served through community-based programs addressing food insecurity.
MY ROLE: I collaborated with organizational leadership to assess community needs, developed a project budget to maximize reach, and wrote a proposal outlining a weekend meal program aligned with the funder’s priorities.
OUTCOMES: Grant funding supported over 250 youth with weekend meal assistance for eight months. Support included family-style ingredient kits with recipes and grocery store gift cards. Families reported reduced stress and improved overall well-being.
